SEO got you ranked. GEO gets you mentioned.
Google gave you a page of blue links to rank on. AI doesn’t have a page of links; it has one answer. Here’s what it takes to be part of it.

The front door moved
More than half of us now open an AI app before we open a search bar. According to Orbit Media’s 2026 AI-Search Adoption Survey, 55% of people say AI chatbots are their primary or most frequent research tool, and 72% use AI at least once a day, up from close to zero just a few years ago. Ask a question about a category, a comparison, or "best X for Y," and you no longer get ten blue links to sift through. You get an answer, already written, with a small handful of brands named inside it.
That shift in searcher behavior is exactly what Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, exists to answer.
What GEO actually is
GEO is the practice of structuring your content and your presence across the web so that generative AI systems (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, and whatever comes next) find you, understand you correctly, and choose to name you when they answer a question in your category. Where SEO earns you a spot on a results page, GEO earns you a place inside the answer itself.
The term itself isn’t brand new. Researchers first coined "Generative Engine Optimization" in a 2023 academic paper, well before marketers picked it up; it only broke into mainstream marketing conversation in 2025, and it still travels under a few different names: Answer Engine Optimization, AI Optimization, LLM Optimization; nobody has agreed on just one yet. Google’s official position is that this is "still SEO," just for a new search experience. Forrester’s read is similar: meaningfully different, not fundamentally different. Both are right, and neither changes what’s actually at stake: you now have to earn a mention, not just a ranking.
Two different jobs
SEO and GEO are chasing two different outcomes, and mixing them up is the fastest way to optimize for the wrong one.
- SEO is built on keywords, backlinks, and the technical signals that tell a crawler your page deserves a high position. The reward is a click, and your page is where the relationship starts.
- GEO is built on being a source a model already trusts: clear, well-structured, fact-forward content; being cited across the web, not just linked to; and being described consistently enough, in enough places, that a model can say "Yetify tracks brand visibility in AI answers" without hedging. The reward isn’t a click. Sometimes it’s just a mention.
That last part matters more than it sounds. AI-referred visits are still a sliver of total traffic, but they convert notably better: Adobe’s 2026 traffic data found AI referrals converting 31% higher than other traffic sources, because by the time someone reaches you through an AI answer, the model already did the research for them. They’re not comparison shopping. They arrived pre-sold.
One doesn’t replace the other
GEO isn’t SEO’s replacement; it’s built on top of it. AI answers are shaped by information available across the web: your own website, third-party sources, and how consistently your brand is described across all of them. That means the same fundamentals that earned you rankings, clean structure, authoritative backlinks, unambiguous entity signals, are much of what earns you citations too. Brands that drop SEO to chase GEO are building on sand. Brands that only do SEO are optimizing for a front door fewer people are walking through.
What to actually do about it
- Track what AI says about you, not just where you rank. Search Console has nothing to say about how ChatGPT describes your product.
- Write to be quoted. Clear claims, defined terms, and straightforward answers to the questions people actually type.
- Build authority beyond your own site. Reviews, comparisons, documentation, forums: anywhere a model might learn who you are.
- Change the scoreboard. Traffic isn’t the whole picture anymore. Share of voice inside AI answers is.
Google knows you. Does AI?
That’s the question Yetify was built to answer. We show you exactly where your brand is showing up in AI answers, where competitors are beating you to the mention, and what to fix first. Ranking is still worth having. Being the answer is worth more.
