Inside the AI Visibility Score: How It’s Calculated

Your brand was mention in ChatGPT. That's Good!

But does it appear consistently? Across different questions? Different AI platforms? And does it keep showing up when the conversation moves from general research to actual comparison and buying intent?

That is where a single mention stops being enough.

AI Visibility turns those individual appearances into something measurable. Instead of asking whether AI has ever mentioned your brand, you can start measuring how visible your brand is across the AI answers that matter to your business over a specific period of time.

That is what the Yetify AI Visibility Score is built to show.

What does the AI Visibility Score measure?

Yetify’s AI Visibility Score measures how consistently your brand appears across the AI answers being tracked.

It runs from 0 to 100:

  • 0 means your brand was not mentioned in any measured answer.
  • 100 means your brand was mentioned in every measured answer.

Everything in between reflects the consistency of your presence across the prompts and AI platforms included in your tracking setup. The important word here is consistency.

A brand appearing repeatedly in one isolated answer is not the same as a brand appearing across many different questions and platforms. AI Visibility is designed to capture the second pattern.

How is AI Visibility calculated?

At its core, the calculation is straightforward:

AI Visibility = average mention rate across tracked prompts and AI platforms.

Yetify calculates a mention rate for each prompt on each AI platform, then averages those results. Each prompt and platform is weighted equally. For example, if your brand appears in 4 out of 10 evenly distributed AI answers, your AI Visibility Score is 40. That sounds simple, but the weighting matters.

Imagine one prompt happens to generate far more responses than another. If we only added up raw mentions, the prompt with more responses could have a disproportionate influence on the final result.

By giving prompts and platforms equal weight, the score is designed to reflect how broadly and consistently the brand appears across the tracking setup, rather than just rewarding the areas where more responses happen to exist.

So a higher score does not mean AI is repeating your brand name more often inside individual answers. It means your brand is appearing across a larger share of what is being measured.

What actually counts as a mention?

A Mention is recorded when Yetify identifies a recognisable reference to the brand in an AI answer, including its brand name or domain. But there is an important distinction. If the same answer mentions your brand five times, that does not count as five separate mentions for AI Visibility. The brand is counted once per answer. That prevents repetition inside one answer from inflating the score.

Consider two simplified examples.

Brand A appears five times in one answer and nowhere else.

Brand B appears once in five separate answers.

The first brand has more repeated references inside a single answer. The second has broader presence across the dataset. For AI Visibility, that difference matters.

The metric is interested in whether you are present, not how many times an AI repeats your name after it has already included you.

A score of 0 is not the same as no score

This is easy to overlook, but it changes how you should read the data. If your AI Visibility Score is 0, Yetify had answers to analyse and your brand did not appear in any of them.

If there are no answers available for the selected period or filters, Yetify displays no score instead of showing 0.

Why does that matter?

Because missing data and zero visibility tell two completely different stories.

One says:

“We measured it, and your brand did not appear.”

The other says:

“There was nothing available to measure under these conditions.”

Treating both as zero would make the metric misleading.

Is an AI Visibility Score of 40 good?

A score of 40 means something very specific: your brand appeared across a certain proportion of the AI answers being measured.

What it does not automatically tell you is whether 40 is good or bad. That depends on context. Your competitors could be sitting at 10. Or 80.

Your visibility might also be concentrated in one group of prompts while being almost nonexistent elsewhere.

The useful question is therefore not simply:

“What is our score?”

It is:

“What is driving our score?”

That is where AI Visibility becomes more useful as a marketing metric.

Two brands can have the same score and very different problems

Imagine two brands both have an AI Visibility Score of 50. At headline level, they look identical. Now look underneath.

Brand A appears consistently in informational questions but almost disappears when users start comparing products or providers. Brand B has moderate visibility across both research and consideration prompts.

Same score. Very different situation.

The first brand may have strong informational presence but a gap closer to decision-making. The second may have a more balanced presence throughout the journey. This is why a single overall number should never be the end of the analysis.

Yetify allows AI Visibility to be broken down by buyer stage and by the tags assigned to tracked prompts, helping reveal where visibility is stronger or weaker.

Buyer stage changes the story

Someone asking:

“What is generative engine optimisation?”

is doing something very different from someone asking:

“Which GEO platform should I use?”

Those questions represent different intentions and potentially different stages of the customer journey.

Looking at AI Visibility by buyer stage lets you see whether your brand appears consistently throughout that journey or mainly at certain points. A strong overall score can therefore hide a meaningful weakness.

You might be highly visible when people are learning about a topic but largely absent when they begin comparing their options.

For a marketing team, that is much more actionable than knowing the overall percentage alone.

Tags show where your visibility actually comes from

The same logic applies to topics. Yetify lets prompts be grouped using tags, so AI Visibility can be compared across the areas or themes you are tracking.

A software company, for example, might discover strong visibility around one product category and weak visibility around another. Again, the average can hide the difference.

Breaking the score down makes it possible to move from:

“Our visibility is 50.”

to:

“Our visibility is strong around this topic, weak around this one, and almost nonexistent at this buyer stage.”

That is a much more useful conversation.

The trend matters more than one snapshot

AI Visibility is also something you need to watch over time.

A score today tells you where the brand stands now. The trend shows whether that presence is becoming stronger, weaker or remaining stable.

Yetify tracks AI Visibility across the selected period and lets you compare that movement with competitors. That shift from snapshot to trend changes the question again.

Instead of:

“Are we visible?”

you can ask:

“Is our visibility moving in the right direction?”

If you are making changes to your content, positioning or wider AI visibility strategy, the movement over time can be far more informative than obsessing over one isolated number.

Go from the score back to the prompts

Eventually, every aggregate metric needs to lead you back to the underlying data.

Recent Prompts Activity helps connect the overall score with the questions contributing to it, showing brand mentions and AI Visibility at prompt level. That is where patterns start becoming specific.

Which questions consistently include your brand?

Where are competitors appearing and you are not?

Which topics seem to generate visibility, and which do not?

The score gives you the signal. The prompts help explain it.

AI Visibility is not your entire AI presence

There is one final distinction worth making. AI Visibility tells you whether your brand appears. It does not tell you everything about what happens when it does.

You may appear frequently but still sit behind competitors. Or you may be visible while accounting for only a small part of the brands being discussed. That is why AI Visibility works alongside other metrics.

Share of Voice adds context around how your presence compares with other brands.

Ranking helps show where your brand is positioned when it appears.

Together, they answer different questions.

Are we appearing?

AI Visibility.

How much of the conversation do we own compared with competitors?

Share of Voice.

Where do we appear when AI presents brands or options?

Ranking.

How is our brand being perceived in AI answers?

Sentiment.

How strong is our overall presence across AI search?

AI Brand Strength.

No single score can answer all three.

The number is the starting point

The value of AI Visibility is not that it gives marketers another percentage to chase. It gives structure to something that would otherwise be difficult to monitor consistently.

You can see whether your brand appears. You can compare that presence over time. You can break it down by buyer stage and topic. And you can trace the overall result back to the prompts behind it.

The score tells you where you stand. The real work starts with understanding why.

For years, searching meant one path: open Google, type a few keywords, scan the results, click what looks right. That habit hasn’t gone away. What we expect from it has — and that’s rewriting how people discover, compare, and choose brands.
